AbstractBody image is a broad, multidimensional construct that encompasses an individual's perceptions, thoughts, and feelings about their own body, most often in relation to its physical appearance (Cash & Pruzinsky, 1990; Schilder, 2013; Thompson et al., 1999). Until relatively recently, the majority of body image and body-dissatisfaction research has focused on adults, with limited research investigating its incidence among adolescents or children. However, as interest in identifying the age at which individuals can begin to experience body (dis)satisfaction has mounted, so has the number of body image studies targeting adolescent and child populations (Birbeck & Drummond, 2006; Clark & Tiggemann, 2006; Dohnt & Tiggemann, 2006; Harriger et al., 2010; Neumark-Sztainer et al., 2002; Ricciardelli & McCabe, 2001). Children as young as 3 years of age engage in body evaluation. The overarching purpose of this study was to evaluate the creators, contents, and messaging of body-positive picture-books geared toward young readers. Body-positive picturebooks provide promise for use in early body-dissatisfaction prevention and body-positivity enhancement, but caution in book selection should be exerted. (ERIC).
