AbstractAn important part of promoting scientific literacy is developing disciplinary literacy practices, such as obtaining information from text and sharing investigation results through talk and writing. To support students to develop disciplinary literacy practices in science, educators must provide opportunities for them to work with multiple modes--resources for meaning-making--such as informational texts, photographs, videos, and physical materials. In this article, the authors share how teachers can support students as they investigate questions about the natural world, such as, "How do animals change their environments?" (ERIC).
