Abstract | The importance of self-determination and best practices in secondary transition serve as the basis for assertions that guardianship and the aims of special education are inherently conflicted. Few studies have explored the perspectives and experiences of special education administrators on the support of students with disabilities and their families as they navigate the changes that come with age of majority. The current exploratory study presents findings from eight semistructured interviews conducted with special education directors in one southeastern state on their experiences related to this domain of practice. Three emergent themes are presented through salient quotes from interviews and discussed: (a) the complexities of age-of-majority conversations with families, (b) the lack of support and training for special education teachers to assist students and families with age of majority issues, and (c) the absence of aid and guidance to maximize support to families and students.
