Abstract | Safe, stable, nurturing relationships between students and school personnel are essential for students' psychosocial development. All students should have access to these relationships, regardless of their background, race, gender, or disability status. Over the past several years, young people have experienced an extraordinary amount of social isolation. Social isolation poses a host of risks to young people's long-term mental and physical health and well-being (Caspi et al., 2006; Lacey et al., 2014). Even before the COVID-19-related social distancing and school closures, national studies found Gen Z (i.e., those born between 1997-2012; Dimock, 2019) to be the loneliest generation (Cigna, 2018). COVID-19 related school closures not only resulted in increased isolation among young people, but also prevented students from accessing a number of critical mental health resources. In this article, the authors review the benefits of positive relationships in schools, and provide practical tips for how school psychologists can help promote them as students and school staff acclimate to a "new normal."
