Abstract | Introduction: Decision-making plays a significant role in secondary education. During their time at high school, students have to make academic decisions which are extremely important for their futures and for this reason they need to be aware of the importance of these decisions and to prepare themselves accordingly. Method: The objective of this study was to validate an ad hoc scale for assessing the emotional, cognitive and social dimensions that come into play in the decision-making process. To this end the scale was administered to a sample of 519 students in the 4th year of ESO (Spanish compulsory secondary education) and the 2nd year of "bachillerato" (Spanish equivalent of sixth form). The scale's reliability was calculated by means of Cronbach's alpha and its validity was tested with an exploratory factor analysis. A Pearson correlation was used to determine the relationship between the factors and scale dimensions. Results: The results showed that that the emotional dimension had the most weight in the decision-making process. The scale presented acceptable levels of reliability and validity for assessing the dimensions involved in decision-making among secondary-school students. Discussion and conclusions: The scale is a suitable and useful instrument for measuring the emotional, cognitive and social dimensions of decision-making, and can be a valid tool as an element of the analysis and assessment of academic and career decision-making in secondary education. The scale has acceptable psychometric properties, and thus represents a reliable and easy-to-apply instrument. (As Provided). |
