Abstract | When it comes to the spread of disinformation, society has lived through the perfect storm. The isolation of the pandemic and the depression induced by that isolation gave rise to a raw need for camaraderie and connection. Forced into digital spaces to work, teach, and learn, meant spending increasing amounts of time in those spaces hoping to be entertained and distracted and informed--informed about the pandemic, about social upheaval, about the impending elections. Disinformation is designed to disrupt, if not dismantle, the social structure of lives and the fabric of governing systems. The personal net effect is that communication and relationships are breaking down. Building student social-emotional competencies is a key antidote to susceptibility to this manipulation. (ERIC). |
