AbstractConnecting just four components that compose modern geographic information systems (GIS)--field surveys, dashboards, interactive maps, and story maps--can help foster spatial thinking, critical thinking, and rigorous use of GIS tools and data. The guidelines in this article walk an educator through the creation of a survey in Survey123, mapping the resulting data in ArcGIS Online, creating and using a dashboard, and creating a multimedia story map. This lesson will focus on walkability--the degree to which a location is deemed walkable or not by an individual. Walkability is somewhat subjective but is influenced by the presence of walkways or trails, the abundance of vehicle traffic, the condition of the surface and the presence or absence of obstacles, signage, the perception of safety, and other factors. These same concepts and guidelines can be used for any theme, from local to global. The same tools can be used to gather and analyze data on weather, landforms, soil and rock type, water quality, land use, land cover, zoning, housing type, historical points of interest, pedestrian and vehicle counts at intersections, types and amounts of litter, invasive species, recycling bins, light poles, or anything else present in the natural or human-build landscape.
