Abstract | In this article, learning about Native American culture is explored, but culturally sensitive practices also have implications for shaping learning experiences about other cultures. Fortunately, there are reputable and well-thought-out curriculum resources to counter misinformation about Native Americans (Caldwell-Wood & Mitten, 1991; Denver Art Museum, 2019; Heard Museum, 2019; Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, 2019). Yet engaging in a complex exploration of culture requires a willingness and commitment to better pedagogical practices (Acuff, 2012). As a non-Native American, when the author heard about the McNay Art Museum's 2019 exhibition "We're Still Here: Native American Artists, Then and Now," she wondered how they would foster learning connections between the historical past and contemporary times. This case study (Stake, 1995) considers how art and conversations were utilized to give audiences additional vantage points in which to understand Native American culture. Using observations of the exhibition and corresponding conversation, the author provides possibilities for connecting theory with practice in the classroom setting at the conclusion of this article.
