Abstract | The reading and writing challenges that students with learning disabilities (LD) face in academic classroom settings, such as social studies classrooms, are ever present because students are expected to read, understand, and use text-based language that they cannot access due to text-reading difficulties. Visual, performing or drama, music, and dance or movement art forms provide multisensory ways for teachers and students to represent and express ideas. These approaches make learning more universal, central, and meaningful to both teachers and students. The Arts-Integrated Academic Club addresses academic vocabulary and social-emotional skills of students with LD through arts-integration strategies. The Arts-Integrated Academic Club supports students with LD in building academic content knowledge and social-emotional skills in academic behavior, self-efficacy, and social competence. There are clear differences between an Arts-Integrated Academic Club and a typical classroom in the club's use of visual- and dramatic-arts elements (e.g., simulated times, places); however, both club and traditional classrooms share the importance of cultivating an authentic, collaborative, and accessible learning community for all. The Arts-Integrated Academic Club can support teachers to bring arts into their classrooms to teach academic content in multidimensional and multisensory ways. (ERIC). |
