Abstract | First, gerontology is a life course perspective that evaluates aging outcomes as the cumulative effect of individual characteristics (socioeconomic status, personality, health behaviors) and where the person lives (i.e., human ecosystems), including the historical context in which they reside. Second, gerontology examines factors that contribute to basic human needs, individual wellbeing, family strengths, and community vitality, and that either help or hinder adults in older age groups. Taken together, this suggests that gerontology may enhance the knowledge base used by family and consumer sciences (FCS) professionals. This article seeks to review the "Journal of Family & Consumer Sciences (JFCS)" and the "Family & Consumer Sciences Research Journal (FCSRJ)" content published during the past 10 years (2010-2019). The goal is to review articles that discuss older adults (age 65 and older), lifespan development, and other topics relevant to gerontology. The purpose of this paper is to identify key themes, opportunities to expand gerontology content in FCS, research and practice recommendations, and the important role gerontology plays in strengthening the Family and Consumer Sciences Body of Knowledge (FCS-BOK).
