AbstractThe focus on curriculum in the new inspection framework in England has increased the likelihood of detailed scrutiny of both science and design and technology (D&T), and with all other subjects also coming into the spotlight and timetables stretched, cross-curricular linking is a popular way to accomplish curricular goals. However, solutions that work on the timetable also need to work in the classroom. The best links occur when the progression in learning in the subjects involved converges, the nature of those subjects is respected, and a lesson or project has clear, relevant objectives for each subject. Contexts where children are investigating or applying knowledge when choosing materials, ingredients, components and mechanisms, or testing and comparing products, are likely to benefit science learning if content and enquiry skills are matched to the year group and curriculum progression. This science should be linked to children designing and making products that fulfil the Design and Technology Association's criteria and require skills and technical knowledge matched to the year group and curriculum progression. This article highlights projects where the links and outcomes are successful at this to various degrees. (ERIC).
