Abstract | I am regularly asked, "What does this have to do with art education?" or "How is this art?" For instance, I like to do a project using the ongoing exhibition, do it, which is a curatorial project that started in 1993. At that time, Hans Ulrich Obrist invited 12 artists to submit a score, or set of instructions, that would then be enacted by people in different places. Some scores direct the creation of an object or installation, such as Felix Gonzalez-Torres's instructions to "get 180 lbs. of local wrapped candy and drop in a corner" (Obrist, 2013, p. 186). Others are more embodied and performative, such as Ben Kinmont's "Invite a stranger into your home for breakfast" (Obrist, 2013, p. 225). Galleries select a group of local participants to enact the instructions, and the resulting pieces are shown as exhibitions. Since do it started, over 100 artists have contributed scores, and new exhibitions continue to emerge worldwide. (As Provided). |
