AbstractIn this "Open Dialogue: Peer Response," the author notes that in the initial paper, "Contributions of Educational Psychology to Understanding Student Learning: What Has Been Discovered - What More Could Be Done?" Entwistle lays out a useful summary of the way that psychology has contributed to an understanding of student learning in institutions of higher education. In response the author complements his perspective with a view of the equally important contributions psychology has made to the learning of younger students. The author also makes clear that his concern is less with understanding student learning, and more with improving it. He writes that he is not saying that 'pure' research into student learning is not worthwhile. He considers it to be an important aspect of scholarship in psychology -- but he also thinks that the bulk of the profession's efforts should be focused on finding out how our understanding of student learning might be used in the service of more effective instruction (here used in the sense of the creation of more effective environments for learning). The author suggests that there are two areas in which educational psychology has made the most substantial contributions to the understanding of student learning, and how it might be improved: specific research on reading instruction, and more general research on the workings of human memory.
