AbstractThe primary learning objectives of this "Next Generation Science Standards" (NGSS; NGSS Lead States 2013) aligned activity is to help high school biology students experience firsthand the role of replication in scientific inquiry and food preference as a behavioral reproductive trait of the Madagascar hissing cockroach. The secondary learning objective is for students to consider the role of randomization in scientific inquiry as described in detail in Wagler and Wagler (2014). After completion of this activity, students will understand why replication of scientific results are essential for building consensus within the scientific community about a given scientific topic, and they will also understand basic concepts regarding experimental design, with a focus on the use of randomization in design. One further strength of this activity is that it teaches experimental design concepts using a charismatic and engaging animal: the Madagascar hissing cockroach. (ERIC).
