| Abstract | In this article, the authors present a 5E learning cycle for fifth grade that focuses on using a model of matter to explain the properties they observe, and how those properties can help identify whether two objects are made of the same type of matter. That model also helps explain phenomena such as why a specific material floats, no matter how much of it is there. The authors used this lesson (which is part of a larger unit) with teachers participating in a professional development workshop that included a practicum experience with elementary learners. In prior lessons, students had developed an initial model of matter being made up of particles, and this lesson was used to further help them consider the connection between the properties of the particles themselves and the properties of the objects they make up.
