Abstract | This article examines a school in the United Kingdom (UK) when they started receiving students of Roma heritage. Babington Academy is a multicultural state school in the city of Leicester. They serve pupils born in Leicester and new arrivals direct from overseas. In 2008, pupils started to arrive from Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The school was experienced in helping new arrivals unused to learning in English settle, engage and make progress in all subjects. However the school eventually discovered that despite the Slovak and Czech passports, these pupils saw their identity and ethnicity as Roma. Further research showed that Roma are Europe's most discriminated ethnic minority and in the countries of origin, most are sent to special schools with a heavily reduced curriculum. Nearly all finished full-time education by 15 without qualifications and low levels of literacy. This made the Roma pupils reluctant to buy emotionally into education and quick to adopt instant defensive positions whenever clashes of perceptions arose. However the school made some reasonable adjustments, and 10 years on the school has four of the Roma pupils holding university places to study Law, Psychology, Architecture and Leisure and Tourism, and next more than half their Roma pupis are on track to get top General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) grades.
