AbstractDiscussions about past experiences in learning in encounter can lead to eliciting their implications for new educational experiences. There is a serious need to revisit some of these historical critiques and historical conversations. It may not seem easy to knock on the door of the historical. For some people this practice provokes fear. However, it is important to question, reflect, and further theorize on the wide-ranging historical experiences that faith traditions have created. Furthermore, by taking into consideration what these historical practices might mean for those exploring education in contemporary times and future spaces, it is the desire of the author that these critical reflections help rekindle the spirit of encounter. Not only through critiquing something as "good" or "bad" but through recognizing the encounter is how people become who they are--through taking the stock of forces in the past and searching for ways in which actions become blessings for the present life. What does encounter mean to the author and what does it do? Does it work for? What lies behind all this? What is its deep meaning and how can people live with it? The author reflects on these questions in this article. The efforts of the author have been directed toward understanding of encounter in a Muslim manner or style of life. The author is not trying to defend or prescribe this approach but just to present an understanding grasped throughout work and life. (ERIC).
