Abstract	The practice of obtaining, interpreting, and contextualizing data across scientific disciplines is crucial to understanding the natural world. The authors developed the Teal Spruce sampling activity to encourage students to explore the reality of scientific data collection while also providing hands-on experience in interpreting and sharing results. A single study could vary or be an outlier for a number of reasons, such as stochastic factors, human bias, or even outright fabrication. Students need a conceptual framework for how a research study is conducted that highlights the pitfalls and uncertainties faced by real-world scientists. This article presents a high school level (NRC 2014) board game that is intended to expose students to some of the difficulties of generating scientific data and demonstrate the importance of independently replicating and communicating research results.
