AbstractThis article outlines Boston Public School (BPS) district's systematic effort to implement an integrated approach to address school behavioral health--the Comprehensive Behavioral Health Model (CBHM). Behavioral health is intricately connected to academic and social success at school and a growing body of research demonstrates the association between academic gains and social and emotional learning. BPS has a compelling need for a comprehensive and integrated approach to behavioral health services. The CBHM was designed to more effectively address the range of social, emotional, and behavioral needs of BPS students using a multitiered system of supports to teach, assess, and monitor all students in learning and behavior. After 6 months of district planning and interviewing key stakeholders, CBHM was launched during the 2012-2013 school year in 10 schools, and each year, another 10 schools join the model. There are now 50 schools participating in CBHM, serving more than 22,000 students. Through CBHM, schools now have a tiered model of interventions and support, including a universal social-emotional learning curriculum as well as universal screening measures, to help schools respond to each student's behavioral health needs. Throughout the process, this model has provided opportunities for the school psychologists to demonstrate building-level leadership as they worked to create safe and supportive learning environments.
