| Abstract | Youth suicidal behavior is a significant public health problem, and schools can play an important role in youth suicide prevention. However, schools cannot do this alone; they need the student's family members and peers, and other professionals and community members, to do their part. School personnel, and particularly school-employed mental health professionals such as school psychologists, have a unique potential to identify when students may be struggling, involve the student's family, and connect them with the appropriate supportive resources. The Model School District Policy on Suicide Prevention offers a blueprint for how to prevent and respond to youth suicidal behavior and involve the individual, familial, school, and community systems that are necessary to support youth at risk. The manner in which the school responds to suicidal youth can indeed save lives. This article discusses the key components of the Model Policy and how to advocate for the Model Policy. (ERIC). |
