AbstractThe Bold Fold, which is presented in this article, is a 45-minute activity in which students create a protein model while learning the processes of transcription, translation, protein folding, and delivery, which are often difficult to understand and have led to common misconceptions (Wright, Fisk, and Newman 2014). This activity has been used with middle school, high school, and freshmen college students, and complements the cellular and molecular biology requirement of the "Next Generation Science Standards" life sciences curricula (MS-LS1-2, HS-LS1-1 [NGSS Lead States 2013]). Stations are used to represent eukaryotic organelles. Students begin with a gene and then perform transcription (Station 1), translation (Station 2), protein folding (Station 3), protein sorting (Station 4), and protein delivery (Station 5). The Bold Fold uses hands-on modeling, which stimulates student engagement and interest (Breckler and Yu 2011), and promotes active learning, which facilitates long-term learning (Freeman et al. 2013).
