Abstract | Even though many educators are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), science often does not receive the attention in elementary school that it should. One way to ensure that elementary school children have the science experiences they need and deserve is to use it as a context to teach math and other subjects. When students have concrete experiences (such as a science activity), abstract ideas are more easily understood. The 5-day life science activity using M&M's that is presented in this article is one that the authors have implemented using the 5E instructional model with third graders is an effective way to have children explore adaptations of organisms and mathematical concepts.
