Abstract | In this commentary, the author states that a major step in bringing developmental studies into correspondence with other disciplines that give civic and political engagement central importance has taken place. The projects reported in this issue represent an important historical development within the discipline of developmental studies. Seen is a new generation of smart researchers using the best of methods to address issues that any intelligent observer would judge as constructive. Of added value is that most of the researchers themselves are young, therefore, assuring that more and better research is yet to come. Noteworthy issues addressed in this special issue are also being raised in associated disciplines such as: volunteering; long term engagement; and opportunities for engagement. By focusing on these and other issues, the contributors to the special issue have taken a substantive step to bring their discipline in alignment with the larger research community for which civic-political life is central to personhood.
