Abstract | New school leaders typically start out with enthusiasm--but sometime in their first year, they often find themselves disappointed, exhausted, and full of self-doubt. In this article, Cathy A. Toll discusses five perspectives that helped her enthusiasm for the job when she was a new school leader: (1) Teachers are well-intentioned, hard-working people who care about students; (2) It's not just about information; it's also about beliefs and values; (3) Everyone has their own vision of success, and it's important to collaborate to develop a plan that's owned by all; (4) Resistance makes perfect sense to the person who's resisting; and (5) Every situation is best approached by first listening. The key idea behind all of these perspectives is that leaders need to tune in and be inclusive. (As Provided). |
