AbstractAlthough there has been a call for the reconceptualization of modern-day physical education, team sports continue to dominate the physical education curriculum landscape. With less time being devoted to physical education than ever before, physical educators must carefully choose which units of instruction they will present to their students. For a variety of reasons--including familiarity, availability of equipment, knowledge and personal experience--quite often, the result is students receiving a large dose of team sports. Consequently, team-sport alternatives, such as dance, gymnastics, racquet sports and adventure education, are commonly relegated to the bottom of the block plan as filler rather than foundational units. Of all the suggested "alternative activities," adventure education could perhaps be the most intriguing, as it places an emphasis on social interaction and collective responsibility in a way that many traditional sports do not. Rather than emphasizing competition and physical supremacy, as is the case with many popular team sports, adventure education requires a unique blend of collaboration, physical skill and higher-order thinking while completing predetermined initiative tasks. In addition to satisfying SHAPE America's National Standards 4 and 5 (SHAPE America--Society of Health and Physical Educators, 2014), further research has suggested that adventure education can be particularly beneficial for improving student self-concept (Gibbons & Ebbeck, 2011). In light of these findings, the purpose of this article is to provide physical educators with the inspiration, information and motivation necessary to create an unforgettable adventure education experience that benefits all learners within the context of their school.
