Abstract | The period of time after a child is identified with a developmental or mental health condition can be highly challenging. This is particularly true for diverse, underserved families who may face competing concerns related to poverty, culture, language, immigration, and family issues. Likewise, clinicians working with underserved families may recognize that usual care is not as effective in this context and look for alternative approaches. The authors share the story of one such family and illustrate how family navigation, a novel approach that addresses individual-level barriers to care, can support families in accessing intervention during the critical period after diagnosis.
