Abstract	In this article, researchers Dick M. Carpenter II and Grant Clayton explore common enrollment systems (CESs)--how they work and what school leaders can learn from districts that have implemented CESs. Denver, New Orleans, and Newark (New Jersey) have rolled out this centralized enrollment process for all district-run and charter schools in their cities. Parents complete one application and rank their preferences for which schools that they want their children to attend (as opposed to multiple applications for multiple schools). A statistical algorithm matches students to schools using these preferences, admissions requirements, available space at the schools, and schools' priorities. The authors argue that CESs allow for more equitable access to high-quality schools by removing some of the burdens in the application process and by providing parents with better sources of information. The article concludes with a discussion about what has been working--and not working--with common enrollment systems and advice for district leaders interested in implementing CESs.
