Abstract | One way teachers can disrupt inequities is by doing the work to foster discussions in which students talk about race--and racism--honestly together. Teachers also need to be ready to talk with students sensitively when the subject of race comes up spontaneously--in a student's work, connected to events outside school, or in response to a racially-tinged event in school. Landsman gives guidance on how teachers can prepare themselves and students for such discussions. Teachers must first reflect on their own biases and must create trusting classroom communities where students' voices are heard. Landsman details six actions that can lead to powerful talks: establish the right guidelines; follow up discussion with action ideas; step in if abusive language surfaces; be present to students; prepare for parents' reactions; and keep your love of teaching--and sense of humor.
