Abstract | We know that students cannot learn if they are not in school, and that students with economic challenges miss school more frequently than other students. What obstacles create this attendance gap, and how can school districts provide the supports to improve attendance for these students? The authors of this article, who work with the Texas Homeless Education Office at the Charles A. Dana Center University of Texas at Austin, describe how 135 Texas school districts have used intensive attendance tracking and targeted support to raise the attendance rates of their homeless student populations. The authors write that other districts could use these same strategies to improve attendance for other students struggling with the challenges of poverty. [Online Feature] (As Provided). |
