AbstractThe minute students first step into any classroom, they begin assessing the environment, the teacher, and one another for clues about what to expect in the upcoming school year. Yet what do they usually encounter the first day? A teacher who's busy assigning seats, reviewing rules, and assessing various skills. However, it is during this time that teachers need to establish relationships, not just routines. In this article, Tucker offers suggestions that teachers can use; for example: (1) a low-tech activity of questions designed to help them get to know each other and create a sense of intimacy; (2) helping students move beyond their own insecurities and fears to form meaningful relationships with in-class and online Icebreakers; or (3) an Instagram challenge in which students follow a list of 25 clues designed to lead them to particular objects and locations around their classroom and on their campus. By the end of the first week of school, students know that their classroom is a student-centered learning environment. They realize that relationships and community building are essential if they are to learn effectively together, and that their teacher values their individual experiences and interests. (ERIC).
