| Abstract | Biotechnology is an innovative field that is consistently growing in popularity. It is important that students are taught about this technology at an early age, so they are motivated to join the field, or at least motivated to become informed citizens and consumers (Gonzalez, et al, 2013). An increase in biotechnology knowledge can result in an increase in scientific and technological literacy, which benefits society as a whole. Standard 15 of "Standards for Technological Literacy" (ITEA/ITEEA, 2000/2002/2007) states that, if society is going to "answer [questions about biotechnology] responsibly, its members must have a basic understanding of biotechnology and the resulting products and systems involved" (p. 151). This article discusses the reasons why biotechnology is not being taught, ways to deal with these problems, why it should be taught in schools, and the best ways to teach it. (ERIC). |
