Abstract | This is a short reply to an article by Anders Schinkel published in the "Oxford Review of Education" in December 2015. His article discusses John White's work on education and a meaningful life. In this reply, White shares his belief that one role of education should be to equip people to lead meaningful lives. He explains that this has to do with helping them acquire the framework, or structure, of goals, relationships, norms, affective reactions and so on. "Another" of its roles is to help them to lead a worthwhile life, prudentially or morally. A worthwhile life must be a meaningful one, but the implication does not hold in the other direction: a wastrel, a mobster or a murderous tyrant may well be leading a life that is far from lacking in goals, norms, relationships and so on: the bad or worthless life they lead is unproblematically meaningful. White goes on to respond to Schinkel's views on White's position on and his own thoughts about life's meaning. Further, he considers Schinkel's views on the unity of morality and the universe and the ultimate purpose of education. (ERIC). |
