AbstractWhen Tom Kelner, a 7th grade social studies teacher, realized that under the Common Core standards he'd be responsible for strengthening students' reading, writing, and research skills in his social studies classes, first he panicked. Then he approached Dana Haring, an English language arts teacher on his 7th grade team, and asked if they could collaborate so that he could introduce more literacy activities into his classes and they could do joint projects that would give students literacy experiences involving social studies content. They have co-planned and co-taught research projects every trimester at their middle school. Haring and Kelner discuss co-planning and co-assessing projects, and list three practices that support interdisciplinary collaborative teaching: (1) choose a common language all students and teachers will use to talk about literacy activities; (2) work with the school schedule to combine your classes; and (3) be flexible about getting co-planning time.
