Abstract | Too often at the high school level, teachers work in isolation, without the ability to see other practitioners at work. Team teaching offers an effective antidote: It provides a comfortable environment in which to grow because it enables teachers to learn from another professional on a regular basis. "Teaming," notes the authors, "serves as a two-person professional learning community." The authors--one a social studies teacher, the other an English teacher, who have been team teaching for the past five years--cite three benefits: Team teaching promotes teacher growth, encourages risk taking, and provides emotional support. Although the benefits to team teaching, for both students and teachers, are substantial, there are some hurdles to address, particularly at the high school level. "Perhaps the biggest challenge to teaming," write the authors, "is finding teachers who are open to learning from one another and to the possibility of adapting their approach." (As Provided). |
