AbstractEnglish teacher Cris Tovani knows from her experiences teaching elementary school that students are naturally curious. But, too often, students are so trained to be question answerers that by the time they reach high school, they no longer form questions of their own and instead focus on trying to figure out what answer the teacher wants. Tovani uses examples from her classroom teaching to show why student questions matter more than teacher questions. When her students ask questions, they are more engaged in learning. Their questions give them a reason to read. Plus, Tovani is better able to discern what they already know than she would have been if they'd all answered the same teacher-generated question. To encourage students to ask questions, Tovani models her own thinking as she reads and uses student questions to guide future lessons. When Tovani asks her own questions of students, she tries to make sure that these questions raise student awareness of what to look for in their reading and that they give her information she needs to inform instruction.
