Abstract	Education is the self-declared "heart" of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR), already generating partnership projects and programs with such organizations as the Canadian Teachers' Federation, the Assembly of First Nations, the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, and the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights. The CMHR has additionally sought to forge links with local universities, participating in a 2011 lectures series, "Thinking about Ideas Museums," at the University of Manitoba, and signing a memorandum of understanding with Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, then-President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winnipeg, with the stated aim to promote "human rights and social justice education." Yet it remains to be determined precisely what relationship future students and faculty from these two university institutions will have with the CMHR. At the University of Winnipeg (UW), there seems a potentially rich collaborative and critical role to play for faculty and students involved in the Master's (MA) in Cultural Studies (CS), with its two dedicated streams: Texts and Cultures and Curatorial Practices. Particular strengths of the program are its multidisciplinarity and an experiential learning component supported by a strong theoretical foundation--aspects both suited to engaging cultural institutions as sites of research and practice, including galleries and museums. This paper aims to encourage those involved in the CS program to think about the concept of "rights" as a framework for approaching and understanding culture and social engagement. (ERIC).
