AbstractThe attitudes of adult basic education faculty members toward teaching adults with learning disabilities are likely to influence the success of their students; however, there are no existing survey instruments that measure this construct or the practical knowledge faculty members should have to effectively serve the population. A new survey instrument was developed based on components from existing faculty surveys and other attitudinal measures. The new instrument included Likert-style items designed to assess teachers' knowledge and attitudes regarding the diagnosis, causal factors, and impact of learning disabilities on academic performance. The survey also queried these teachers about basic support and referral systems available to these students within their institutions. Five stable factors that provide some information about teachers' attitudes and knowledge were found: "Teacher Knowledge," "Value of Diagnostic Assessment," "Student Academic Potential," "Student Attitudes," and "Dependence." Descriptive results suggest teachers maintain an overall positive service attitude, but the likelihood that teachers will refer students, whom they suspect is contending with a disability, remains low.
