Abstract | Non-religious college students can feel marginalized and isolated on college and university campuses when they feel they are being misunderstood or judged. This article explores the process of their revealing their non-religious status, or coming out, to others. Researchers interviewed 17 student members of a secular student group at a large public research university in the southwest United States. These non-religious students experienced a coming out process of identifying to others as an agnostic or atheist. For these students, the coming out process occurred in stages, and a better understanding of these stages and the emotional aspects related to them can assist residence life staff in working with those going through a similar process.
