Abstract	As Barry Brummett (1984) has argued, the purpose of rhetorical theory is pedagogical--providing students with resources for understanding the rhetorical transactions that they encounter every day. An understanding of the implications of ideology is necessary for advanced communication students. Kellner and Share (2005) contend that this is especially important when dominant groups still create the representations students encounter in their everyday mediascape, and these messages often appear transparent and natural. Consequently, teachers must work with students to reveal the power structures behind a variety of images. Furthermore, Kellner (2004) emphasizes the need for educators to rethink the traditional academic focus on print literacy, especially as the technical skills of students begin to outpace those of teachers. This activity, which uses the "Four Freedoms" as a case study for exploring both verbal and visual ideographs, allows instructors a means to combine rhetorical theory, historical oratory, and digital media creations. Specifically, the goal of this one-day activity is to help students understand the concepts of ideology and visual ideographs. (ERIC).
