Abstract	Social studies teachers have the principal responsibility for developing competent citizens who can reason together about the challenges of democratic life. Always complicated, informed reflective citizenship is even more difficult in an age of exploding information, often from sources whose credibility has not been subject to editorial review. Authentic pedagogy, grounded in meaningful challenges that resemble the work done by adults in the real world, offers an established strategy for teachers to engage students and encourage them to do the hard work required for complex understanding, problem solving, and decision making. This article discusses what authentic pedagogy is and why practicing it can be demanding, but very rewarding. (ERIC).
