AbstractThis article describes Bill Ferriter's efforts to incorporate cause-driven learning into his 6th-grade grade language arts and social studies classroom starting with Kiva (http://www.kiva.org), a microlending website that pairs interested lenders in the developed world with people in the developing world who are working to improve the quality of their lives and the lives of their families by starting small businesses. With the support of Kiva-vetted social service agencies in poor countries across the world, lenders--regular people like you and I--are literally changing lives, one interest-free, $25 loan at a time. Students want to make a difference in their world. In this article Ferriter suggests that using digital tools to raise awareness is a great strategy for tapping into that desire to get involved and a great way to incorporate traditional academic skills into real-world activities that resonate with students. Other examples of cause-driven learning projects that will inspire students are provided. (ERIC).
