Abstract | "Media Clips" appears in every issue of "Mathematics Teacher," offering readers contemporary, authentic applications of quantitative reasoning based on print or electronic media. The theme of this issue's "Media Clip" revolves around four items relating to lumber. These items include: A Q&A published in the "(Toronto) Globe and Mail" on the inaccuracy of lumber measurements, an excerpt of instructions for constructing deck stairs and handrails, a New York sawmill's product price list, and a chart providing standard reference and size data for commercially available lumber in the US. Thirteen mathematical problems relating to each of these items are provided along with corresponding answers. (ERIC). |
