Abstract	The numbers speak for themselves in terms of the crisis of hunger among kids in the United States: More than 16 million children--one in five--live in households that struggle to put food on the table. Nearly half of all food stamp recipients are children. But, argues Felling, the battle against childhood hunger can be won; the United States has enough food. Schools and teachers, who know firsthand the realities of many kids' lives, are on the front lines of this battle. Felling gives results of a recent survey indicating that U. S. teachers are worried about widespread hunger among students and its effects on learning. She shares two changes that would go far to lessen the hunger crisis--and explains how teachers can help spur those changes: (1) removing barriers so more students would take part in free or reduced-price school breakfast programs and (2) making families and communities aware of the existing summer meals programs funded by the Department of Agriculture that exist in many high-needs areas of the country.
