AbstractFeedback has been a major area of dissatisfaction according to the UK National Student Survey in recent years, despite general acceptance of its importance. A feedback strategy was implemented in October 2009 at a small specialised higher education institution (HEI). A case study was carried out to assess how satisfied staff and students are with feedback, the methods of feedback staff use and whether students are engaging with the feedback they get. Questionnaires were used to collect staff and student perceptions of assessment. Results showed that staff who responded to the questionnaire felt that students sometimes got enough feedback, that feedback was sometimes available to them and that they sometimes used it to aid future learning. The majority of staff replied that they were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with the feedback policy at this HEI, and made suggestions for its improvement. The most common suggestions were the introduction of electronic submission, a standard feedback proforma and more guidance. The student respondents reported that the quantity and timing of feedback was extremely poor and that they were dissatisfied with the quality of feedback available to them. In addition, students reported that they were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with their ability to use feedback to aid future learning. Based on the findings of this case study, the HEI evaluated can make considerable improvements to its feedback practices, which could improve the learning experience of its students. (As Provided).
