Abstract | The high teacher attrition and early-career exodus of beginning teachers suggest that traditional methods fall short of providing the support needed by beginning teachers. This qualitative study examined the challenges encountered by student teachers during their practicum experience. Findings suggest that the attrition rate may be at least partially caused by a lack of realistic expectations on the part of student and beginning teachers. Student teachers reported feeling overwhelmed by the time requirements of teaching and lacked the skills to manage extremes of student behavior. The study suggests the need for the inclusion of stress reduction and time management courses to aid in the transition to the classroom. (As Provided). |
