AbstractNo institution relishes reliving the dark moments of its history, but addressing legacies of discrimination can strengthen campus inclusivity, embody shared values, and communicate how and why the institution has evolved over time. Colleges and universities with complex histories can benefit by exploring that history. No matter how a project begins, a successful outcome depends on smart choices by leaders. First, the project should be treated as a chance to articulate and act on institutional values. Second, projects should encourage community building. And third, given the complex racial and ethnic history of the United States and ongoing debates regarding discrimination, institutions should plan for a range of emotions and reactions. In this article, the author describes the approaches a number of academic institutions have taken in acknowledging actions that have stained their pasts and demonstrates how this acknowledgement has better positioned them for the future.
