AbstractIn this brief article, the author argues that if society defines schools as testing centers instead of learning centers where young people go to watch adults work, then teacher education programs are replaceable. Online technologies allow for the transmittal of information without the need for traditional classroom settings. However, if schools respond to the present era by revamping curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices in light of the collaborative, global, innovation age, then teacher education programs have a critical role in assisting in the preparation and renewal of America's teachers. The purpose is to prepare young people to work together to solve problems or to create knowledge that helps improve the human condition. This is in sharp contrast to an assembly-line or information age vision of schooling. With this focus in mind, curriculum can be designed to inherently target in providing powerful learning experiences that it takes a well-mentored and apprenticed teacher to accomplish this challenge.
