AbstractSoon after news of the child molestation scandal involving Jerry Sandusky, a former Pennsylvania State University assistant football coach, broke in November 2011, the development and alumni relations staff gathered for a town hall-style meeting. "The Penn Stater" has tackled controversial topics before: student riots, a faculty member whose tenure was revoked, a women's basketball coach who was accused of discriminating against lesbians. But this was ugliness on a whole new scale. How a campus periodical deals with tough subjects--or whether it should tackle them at all--is a dilemma that institutions have wrestled with for years. For many administrators, and even some editors, the idea of printing anything negative goes against instinct. Others would argue, however, that if one is honest with readers, they'll actually love him/her more. One is showing them an institution that's open, realistic about itself, and worthy of their confidence. "The Penn Stater" has long had strong support from Rod Kirsch and Roger Williams, executive director of the Penn State Alumni Association; both have advocated for the magazine's editorial integrity.
