AbstractThe alumni relations profession has undergone profound changes in the past century. Alumni officers have responded to opportunities and threats presented by advancing technologies, shifting cultural norms, and unstable world economies. Innovations such as Facebook and smartphones have changed everything, and in a flat world, alumni relations offices don't control relationships with or among graduates. No longer satisfied with an alumni directory, graduates are using social media to independently communicate with one another, form communities, and plan their own events. They want to affiliate with people who have shared interests, not just a shared graduation year. Alumni professionals today operate in a new world. To observe the first 100 years of alumni relations as a professionalized field and to shed light on the challenges and opportunities alumni relations approaches at the dawn of its second century, CURRENTS spoke with an octet of distinguished alumni leaders who share their thoughts about this brave new world.
