Abstract | Several excellent frameworks exist that define components of positive youth development and demonstrate an inverse relationship with adolescent risks (Ginsburg, 2007). The authors have found that many of their colleagues have been drawn to the Circle of Courage for its clarity and spirit (Brendtro, Brokenleg, & Van Bockern, 2002). This model is grounded in evidence that adolescents can grow to healthy adulthood with opportunities for belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity. Clinicians from many different disciplines interact with adolescents, some infrequently and often for just brief periods of time. Using the Circle of Courage can turn each of these interactions into an opportunity to identify and reinforce strengths in these adolescents. Many clinicians have found that using this approach adds a new dimension to their professional lives. It can help set up an alliance where adolescents, parents, and clinicians can function as collaborators trying to address a concern, rather than as adversaries focused on making the adolescent change or behave.
